Vocational Training
Community Youth learn computer software.

The vocational training program trains and assists unemployed and underemployed community members to develop skills and find gainful employment.

Many residents of Nizamuddin Basti lack the skills needed to be successful in the job market. There are many residents who have not completed high school and do not have the resources to obtain vocational training to be competitive in the job market. Some older adults also need to update their skills in areas such as computers and English that are necessary in the modern Indian economy. Many women face additional social barriers to working outside the community and need to generate income at home.

The Hope Project meets this need by providing courses in a number of areas such as tailoring, jewelry-making, cooking, English language, computers and office administration. The training also gives students confidence and exposure to opportunities they would not have realized were available to them. We have also joined with other organizations providing training to poor youth in areas such as geriatric care and food management.

Some of our graduates have been placed in call centers, banks, hospitals and hotels. The women of the Basti have also used their skills to work from home. Some are even working with The Hope Project in our bakery and catering unit or with Aashyana.
